Efficiency Vermont’s annual appliance recycling program is back for a limited time, as Vermonters tackle spring cleaning projects and look to declutter by getting rid of old appliances.

The program starts today and is available throughout the summer while funding lasts. The program helps customers lower energy costs by reducing the number of inefficient appliances plugged into Vermont’s electric grid and avoids more waste going to landfills.

Customers can recycle secondary refrigerators and freezers, as well as old window air conditioners, mini refrigerators, and dehumidifiers at no cost, and receive cash back in exchange for the working appliance.

“While it can seem like a small thing, unplugging old, inefficient appliances is an easy way to reduce your energy bills and reduce the strain on Vermont's electric grid,” said Peter Walke, Director of Efficiency Vermont. “Older appliances are typically much less energy efficient than today’s models. By making it easier to recycle them, we can partner with our customers to support Vermont’s climate goals together, while helping people save money and free up space in their homes.”

All recycled units should be in working condition and owned by the customer. There is a limit of four units per household. Pickup is free. Each unit will be tested at the recycling facility to verify they are in working order. A check will be sent to the customer based on the type of working appliance recycled. Efficiency Vermont will provide the following payments to customers who recycle working appliances:

  • $50 check for standard-sized refrigerators and freezers
  • $20 check for window air conditioners, dehumidifiers, and mini fridges.

Contactless pickups are available by request, in which case appliances can be left in an open garage, in a driveway, on a porch, or in any other accessible location that doesn’t require the driver to enter a home. Pickup and recycling service will be provided by ARCA Recycling, Inc., which is working under contract with Efficiency Vermont.

The offer is available to customers throughout Vermont by signing up online. Pickup dates will vary by region and can be scheduled after June 6 until funding runs out. Customers will see available pickup dates based on their zip code when they sign up online at www.efficiencyvermont.com/recycle. Customers without internet access can call ARCA directly at 888-998-6323 to sign up by phone.
